about

This was my breakup ballad, from the perspective of a guy whose girlfriend leaves him for someone else - and by the end it turns out that he was Pee-Wee Herman all along. This was definitely somewhat inspired by my real life high school breakup, but not being emotionally mature enough to talk about it with anyone. So I wrote a goofy song about it instead! I do remember enjoying the solo breakdown, because it’s over a basic power chord meaning I could solo in a major key, then move to a minor key, and back to the major in time for the pre-chorus. I of course included “Gamehendge”, a random Phish reference, because I loved strange rhymes at the time. I do think my last “scream” chorus turned out well, I did my best Julian Casablancas impression which was fun. And then we’ve got another meandering guitar outro, because, why not? –Adam

Faux-angry, drunk Adam at the end always cracks me up. We loved Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and wrote a few songs with Pee-Wee references, and the Dottie diptych (there’s also “Dottie II” from later) is pop-smart Adam in all his glory. I thought and still do think the chord sequence in the chorus is inspired. –Ross

lyrics

Remember the times? All the things we shared?
Just you and me, the perfect pair
But now that’s all gone, you’re movin’ out
I’m left alone, to sit here and pout
I know there’s a guy behind all your lies.
A man who needs to plant his seeds in you...

Dottie don’t go, give me a clue
Tell me his name, I love you too!

Soon you will see, I’ll have my revenge
Take all your things, just leave Gamehendge
At first I wasn’t sure, maybe it was all in my head
Then I found his bowtie; mine have never come in red.
Dottie…
